Dr. Javita McKinney- Highlands District 3
1. Please share your thoughts related to the importance of the school library/media center and the role of a certified, trained librarian/media specialist in schools.
THE ROLE OF THIS SPECIALIST SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS AN ADMINISTRATOR OR CONSTITUTIONAL OFFICER OF THE STATE, COUNTY AND SCHOOL BEING SERVED. THE DUE DILIGENCE OF RESEARCH AND PRODUCT SELECTION AS WELL AS PURCHASING MEDIA/LIBRARY MATERIALS IS VITAL TO THE EDUCATION QUALITY OF EVERY SCHOOL K-12 AND EVEN UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE.
2. Florida school libraries/media centers have always supported parents' rights to direct their students' education. How would you balance parental rights and student access to library materials, especially given that some books trigger different reactions among parents, all of whom deserve rights?
BOOKS AND MEDIA MATERIALS MUST HAVE AN AGE APPROPRIATION STANDARD. THIS IS DONE BY THE PARENTS, BUT ALSO, SHOULD BE DONE IN A LIBRARY/MEDIA SETTING. THE REFERENCE SECTION AND OTHER RESTRICTED MATERIALS SECTIONED OFF FROM THE GENERAL POPULATION SHOULD BE AVAILABLE IN ORDER FOR THOSE ALLOWED OR NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE ACCESS TO BE FULFILLED. PARENTS/GUARDIANS WHO DO NOT HAVE ANY RESRICTIONS CAN JUST HAVE A NR NOTE AND OTHER PREFERENCES CAN BE SENT IN BY DOCUMENT TO THE SCHOOLS LIBRARY/MEDIA SERVICE FOR ACCOMODATING THE STAKEHOLDERS. THIS IS COMMON COURTESY AS WELL AS CONSTITUTIONAL OFFICATING OF THE PROTECTIONS ALL STAKEHOLDERS HAVE. TO BREECH THESE RIGHTS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A MISDEMEANOR OR FELONY. ACCORDINGLY. SOME FORM OF PUNISHMENT CAN BE MADE INTO POLICY AND SOME FINES OR REMOVAL FROM EMPLOYMENT SHOULD ALSO BE CONSIDERED FOR THESE OFFENSES. STILL, THE STAKEHOLDERS MUST AGREE WITH THIS SYSTEM OF CHECKS AND PUNISHMENTS AS WELL AS THE MEDIA/LIBARY SPECIALIST.
3. Students have access to reading material through captive classroom instruction, read-alouds and novel studies, as well as through self-selection in libraries where they choose their own book. How would you differentiate between the appropriateness of reading material in a captive classroom vs. self-selection in the school library?
THE STANDARD CAN BE A CAMPUS WIDE STATUS SUCH AS A CHARTER OR PRIVATE SCHOOL. A PUBLIC SCHOOL SHOULD HAVE A FORM OR CARD NOTIFICATION OR EMBLEM TO INDENTIFY THE STUDENT'S CHOICE BY PARENTAL REQUEST/CONSENT ACCORDING TO AGE, MATERIAL OF QUESTION, AND SO FORTH. THERE CAN BE A WAY TO ACCOMODATE EVERY STAKEHOLDER IF THIS IS DONE BY THE FULL TEAM; PARENTS/MEDIA/LIBRARY SPECIALIST/SCHOOL ADMIN/ SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS.
4. As written in Florida House Bill 1069, “Parents shall have the right to read passages from any material that is subject to an objection. If the school board denies a parent the right to read passages due to content" deemed unsuitable as defined in the bill, the school district must discontinue use of the material. If a reader is denied, explain why you would interpret the law by supporting or opposing a fair and public review of the book, as outlined in each district's objection policy.
THE DISTICT'S OBJECTION SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED IF THIS MATERIAL IS ALREADY AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS WHICH IS CONSIDERED A BREECH OF THE PARENTAL AND STUDENT RIGHTS. THE SPECIFIC MATERIAL MUST BE GIVEN AS EVIDENCE PUBLICLY SINCE THE SCHOOL BOARD DOES NOT PROVIDE A TOWN HALL MEETING TO ATTEND TO SUCH ISSUES OF CONCERN. MAYBE SPELLING THE SPECIFIC OFFENSIVE WORDS VS SAYING THEM BUT THE PUBLIC SHOULD KNOW AND HEAR WHAT IS BEING DISPLAYED TO OUR STUDENTS OF ALL AGES. NOW ALLOWING THE READING IS VS THE FIRST AMENDMENT OF THE CONSTITUTION.
